Arabic
The learning of Arabic, like any other language, develops an awareness of and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity. This Arabic Language & Culture 3Y 15, 25, 35 Courses are intended for students who are beginning their study of Arabic language and culture in senior high school. As well, for those students who already have some knowledge of the Arabic language or a family connection to the culture, it offers an opportunity to renew contact with their language and culture.

Arabic Language and Culture 15-3Y (5 Credits)
The focus of this course will be on developing the students' ability to perform basic language functions in real-life situations and introducing the students to an overview of Arabic culture. Through creative learning experiences where a model of specific linguistic elements are consistently provided and immediately available, students will learn basic communicative functions, i.e., commonly used phrases, basic grammar, complete sentence use, sound, and writing system. At the end of the course students will be able to greet, express emotions and understand simple sentences. Students will also be able to recognize, pronounce, and put together basic words and phrases.

Arabic 25-3Y (5 Credits)
Prerequisite: Arabic Language and Culture 15-3Y
This interactive course builds upon the structural and lexical base provided in Arabic 15 through learning situations where a familiar context for the use of specific linguistic elements are provided and students are guided in the use of these linguistic elements. Students in this course will have increased awareness and emerging control of the linguistic elements and will be able to apply them in familiar contexts with teacher guidance. At the end of the course, students will be able to lead simple conversations, spell known words accurately and identify elements that reflect Arabic speaking cultures.

Arabic 35-3Y (5 Credits)
Prerequisite: Arabic Language and Culture 25-3Y
The Arabic 35 course continues to develop student proficiency in communication, building upon their learning in Arabic 15 and 25. Students in Arabic 35 use specific linguistic elements in a variety of contexts with limited teacher guidance. Students in such situations will have consistent control of the linguistic elements and will be able to apply them in a variety of contexts with limited teacher guidance. Students will use the language creatively and for aesthetic purposes (e.g. experiment with the sounds and rhythms of the informal language). Students will also be able to initiate and participate in social exchanges in a variety of situations to communicate with people within and beyond the school setting.
