Teachers Job Description

The Islamic and Arabic teachers are responsible for the effectiveness of the academic programs and teaching materials. Their main duties include:

1. Delivering lessons to students according to the plan of the Academy and insuring that curricular expectations and goals are achieved.

2. Maintaining learning, fun and caring environment that nurtures children and parents, and reflects Islamic values.

3. Preparing first / final exams, quarterly tests, projects, worksheets and grading rubrics.

4. Communicating with subject coordinator in professional manner; ex: proofreading tests, any curriculum issues, class rules, and testing standards.

5. Attending Parent-Teacher interviews, meetings, Professional Development sessions and other relevant functions.

6. Submitting report cards, notes to parents, yearly plans, weekly lesson plans, attendance sheets and other relevant papers.

7. Communicating with parents and answering their questions in professional manner.

8. Acting as a role-model for students in dress code and behaviour.

Addition of new level 1 class - Sunday, October 23, 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians of Level 1 Students:

We would like to inform you of a positive reform we are undertaking in order to improve our level one classes.

We will be adding a new level 1 class and as well as a new teacher to our staff this will help us reduce the number of students per class and improve student / teacher ratio.

This change will alleviate the large class load per teacher and will allow teachers the luxury of more one on one time with your children and promote high quality learning at that tender age.

The other great advantage of this reorganization is that it will address an issue raised in last year's survey- the issue of Arabic as a second language for some students.

HA Class and Level Switching - Thursday, September 29, 2011

AssalamuAlaikum

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Horizon Academy (HA) have started last week and we currently have more 315 registered students with many classes fully booked. The volunteers of the HA management committee (HAMC) are working hard to finalize all classes before Sunday.

Some parents are asking to switch their children from one class to another or from one level to another. HAMC will try to accommodate as much as possible on first come basis but without breaking the following rules of the Academy:

Parent must send a written request by e-mail to info@horizonacademy.ca specifying the child full name, current class and desired classroom to be transferred to. (Note: the date of this e-mail is your priority date)
Placement in a given class must be age appropriate.
Maximum 23 students per class to assure appropriate learning environment.
If you want to change your child from one class to the other, you must find another student to swab with to keep the classes balanced.
Changing levels must be recommended by the teacher and approved by the academic coordinator (teacher Abeer) and the operational manager (Mrs Maisa). Note: a teacher's recommendation is not sufficient and has to be approved.
Any student who change class without previous approval by HAMC will be returned to their class by the teacher.

Thank you for your understanding and respect of the Academy rules. We ask our parents to please be patient with us as we continue building a safe and efficient Academy that we all will be proud of.

Four Easy Step to register:

1) HA Student Demographic form*

2) Placement Test if new students are aged 7-17

3) Payment

4) Register on line.

If your child is 7 to 17 years old, you need to bring him/her with you to take a placement test. If your child is 4-6 years old they will be placed to an age appropriate level. (To be admitted to Pre-KG the child has to be born before March 01, 2008)

Children 13-17 years old are eligible for the Youth LDC. (Pre-requisite: HA Level 7 or approval by HAI board on a case by case basis.)

All parents/Guardians must bring their cheque book (No cash payment accepted).

All parents will be required to volunteer with the school at least 10 times a year. A refundable volunteering deposit cheque of $150/nuclear family will be collected on the day of registration.

Please note the academy requires 35 staff inside and outside classrooms per week to run a safe operation and save families a 10% increase in tuition. Parents can also fullfill their volunteering obligation by inviting extended family or friends to volunteer on their behalf.

The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) is seeking public interest in the provision of an Arabic Bilingual program in its elementary public school system. If there is sufficient interest, the program would open in September 2012 for kindergarten and grade 1 students, and would expand one grade per year. The CBE is holding an open house on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Central Memorial School (5111 – 21 Street SW) between 5:30 and 7 p.m. CBE administration will be available to provide information about what the Arabic bilingual program will look like and gather input from the community about their interest in the program. We encourage you to attend this open house and if your child or children are eligible (ages 6 years and younger), show your support by filling out an expression of interest form that will be available at the CBE open house.

Please also join us for coffee and donuts on Sunday, May 8, 2011, immediately after you drop off your kids, at 10:15 a.m. at the Horizon Academy cafeteria to learn more about this exciting initiative. Please invite your friends and family. In particular, we encourage families with young children (ages 6 years old and under) to come out as your children can immediately benefit from the proposed introduction of this Arabic program in 2012 and future years.

Dear Parents

We are pleased to share with you some exciting news about our school. As part of our continuous efforts to improve Horizon Academy’s performance and take it from good to great; also based on the overwhelming feedback we received from most parents during the Parents Information Session held earlier this year, we are pleased to inform you that the Horizon Academy Board and Teaching Staff have decided to make the following enhancements effective January 2011:

- Make Horizon Academy program more fun and enjoyable to our students by introducing new proven teaching methods & techniques based on games, audio, visual, stories, etc. to deliver the school’s curriculum.

- We will maintain focus on the quality of education that we pride our academy with but we would do it in a more fun method that will help our students enjoy the learning process and look forward for their Sunday class at Horizon Academy

- Replace some of the remaining exams and quizzes with appropriate (group or individual) projects and in-class contests to test students in a more comfortable and relaxed way without having them to go through the stress of doing an exam or a quiz.

- We will ensure that teachers will have the ability to evaluate their students’ understanding of the material being taught but in a stress free environment.

- We purchased (and will continue to purchase) more educational games, videos, stories, etc. for Arabic language & Social Islamic studies to help our teachers to make their day to day teaching more fun & enjoyable by their students

- Increase focus and emphasis on completing the entire Arabic language & Social Islamic studies curriculum in one school year so they can start a new book in the following school year. (i.e. will not finish one half of the book in one year & the 2^nd half in the following year; the entire book will be completed in one school year)

The above changes are in line with Horizon Academy’s vision and mission and are an important step to make Horizon Academy the school of choice for our community in Calgary.

Please find below the final date & time of the End of Year HA Ceremony which will take place in the school gym (our regular school location - Chinook Learning Center ). Also, please find below the revised dates of the end of year party practice, final examination, and report card distribution & last day of classes

Horizon Academy is pleased to announce that our second annual Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Sunday April 11th during regular school hours. Classes will be conducted from 10am-12pm comprising of 1hour of Arabic studies and 1hour of Islamic studies. Parent Teacher Interviews will take place in the cafeteria beginning at 12:00pm interviews will be conducted on a first come first serve basis and ending at exactly 2:30pm. We encourage all parents to arrive at 12:00pm in order to ensure ample time for interviews as well as to provide all parents the opportunity to have an interview.
